Growing Confident, Kind and Capable Citizens of the Future
At Birchensale, personal development is not an extra. It is at the heart of everything we do. Through our values of Belong, Motivate, Succeed and Resilient, we help children develop the character, confidence and skills they need to thrive both now and in the future.
We believe children achieve their best when they feel a sense of belonging, are motivated to learn and grow, have opportunities to succeed, and develop the resilience to overcome challenges. Together, these values prepare every pupil to contribute positively to their community and move confidently into the next stage of their education and life beyond Birchensale.
Our Future Citizens Programme provides every pupil with the knowledge, character, confidence and opportunities they need to flourish. Guided by our values of Belong, Motivate, Succeed and Resilient, we create a culture where every child feels valued, inspired to achieve, equipped to overcome challenges and prepared to make a positive contribution to the world around them. Through this, we help every child become a confident, kind and capable citizen of the future.
A School Where Children Belong
We work hard to ensure that every child feels a strong sense of belonging at Birchensale. Pupils learn to:
- Build positive relationships
- Show respect for others
- Understand differences and celebrate diversity
- Keep themselves safe, healthy and happy, both online and offline
Through PSHE, assemblies, tutor time, educational visits, enrichment activities and daily routines, pupils develop their understanding of friendships, wellbeing, emotions and responsible decision-making in an age-appropriate way. Strong pastoral support and clear expectations help every child feel secure, valued and confident to be themselves.
Building Character for Life
We help children develop the personal qualities and life skills they need to thrive, including:
- Resilience and perseverance
- Kindness and compassion
- Responsibility and independence
- Confidence to speak, perform and lead
Children are encouraged to embrace new opportunities, take positive risks, learn from setbacks and celebrate their achievements. We value effort, growth and contribution just as highly as success.
13 Before 13 Award: Unforgettable Experiences for Every Child
From Autumn 2026, every Birchensale pupil will have the opportunity to complete our 13 Before 13 Award, taking part in thirteen memorable experiences before the age of thirteen.
These include:
- Residential and outdoor learning adventures
- Theatre trips, museums and cultural visits
- Performances, presentations and showcases
- Clubs in sport, the arts, STEM and creative pursuits
- Leadership roles and community projects
- Inspirational visitors and workshops
- Visits beyond the local area, including cities and landmarks
These experiences build confidence, character, skills and lasting memories, ensuring that every child benefits regardless of their background. Every achievement is recognised and celebrated, helping pupils see themselves as capable, ambitious and adventurous learners.
Each child will receive a 13 Before 13 Passport, collecting stamps as they complete their experiences.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We offer a wide range of clubs, trips and enrichment opportunities across all year groups. Children can explore:
- Our well-resourced Forest School
- Sport and physical activity
- Music and the arts
- STEM challenges and creative problem-solving
- Teamwork, leadership and responsibility
We actively encourage participation and work hard to ensure opportunities are available to all. Barriers to involvement are identified and removed wherever possible, including financial, emotional and practical challenges.
Our Promise to Families
We believe personal development should be inclusive by design. This means:
- Every child is entitled to the same opportunities
- Additional support is provided wherever needed
- Participation is carefully monitored
- No child is overlooked or left behind
We work in partnership with families to nurture children’s confidence, wellbeing and aspirations. Our aim is that every pupil leaves Birchensale not only academically prepared, but also happy, capable, resilient and proud of who they are, ready to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.
