At Birchensale Middle School, we want all pupils to read well. We want them to be accurate, fluent and expressive readers who understand every word they read.

Reading is the key that opens all other learning

We use a rigorous, engaging programme of guided reading which is timetabled throughout the school.

In Key stage 2 pupils have five reading lessons a week. One of those is a library session.

In KS3, pupils have four reading lessons a week including a library session.

During these lessons, we teach pupils strategies for reading called expert tips.

We use many different text types including poetry and non-fiction. We also read stories aloud. For pupils who need help in reading, we use a phonics programme called ‘Fresh Start Phonics’. This is for pupils who are older and need to catch up. Ruth Miskin, the producer, states.

We have a beautiful library. In the library, we use a system called Accelerated Reader. All our pupils are given a reading book that matches their current reading age. When they have read the book, they take an online quiz to see if they have understood it. After reading a few books at that level and getting the quizzes correct, they can move up a level. This way their reading comprehension is improved. Form tutors also check our pupils reading scores and talk to them about their book choices.

In our KS2 classrooms, there is a reading area, and we have all the current ‘recommended reads’ for your child’s age group. In KS3 these recommended reads are in the library.
